The mass discovery of the internet may be one vital reason behind such a gigantic revolution.

Peoples are enjoying the exceptional revolution that is happening in India. India has been ranked as the second largest smartphone users of the world. As the data connection prices have ripped down which has been marked to having a smartphone with an internet connection in everybody’s pockets now and then. Smartphones have drastically changed the cultural norms and behavior of the individual.

Smartphone addiction has been a buzzword as smartphones have replaced everything from a simple calendar to DSLR cameras. Despite being lighter and smaller than a paperback book the smartphone became handy for convenient use of people. Smartphones play a major role in human interactions in the 21st century and have been as dramatic as it is far reaching.

A Thrive to phone perusal

Smartphones are the foremost favor for the book lovers since the paperback. Indians are incredibly value conscious especially when it comes to online reading. Books must be given cheaper to the customer for their consumption. More and more people are doing their readings in snippets on their phones and publishers are taking notice of the reader’s mindset. Publishers are adjusting, formatting and even marketing all sorts of things to make more people download books to their phones as they could make a standard amount of profit out of it. But a question is still aroused whether the readers will be able to concentrate on their readings as the way they enjoy reading books. The great fret about smartphones is that they are killing our ability to focus. As smartphones are attention magnets the capability of Productive thinking requires attention. There’s too much opportunity to stray from reading when phones are in our hands.Phones keep buzzing and distracting which lacks attentiveness which may reduce the excitement of being in a world of science fiction or the books according to people’s taste.

From getting immersed into a book and ignoring the rest of the world, the outlook has brought a change in the mindsets of the people when the smartphones had walked in. it is easy to get interrupted with a new notification on instagram by a text message from a friend or even by a phone call from someone who may not even be an urgent call to be taken.

Then there are these obvious advantages too that the features of the phones have adjustable backlight, a built-in bookstore, readability and accessibility settings, automatic dark mode, search, and best of all, one-handed page turning.  The triumph of the mobile reading applications made to gobble up the attention which is totally dependent on there being nothing better to do. Where such applications can be a podium for amateur writers to showcase their talents. In such applications all the short stories, biographies, poems, fictions etc… Will be updated briskly as the choice of the readers changes from time to time. The idea of such a reading application must be relevant to every moment of a reader’s life which gives a dramatic success to such an application. The writer in such platforms must have the ability to capture what a book is and how a reader behaves.

Uprising of smartphones in India

India’s mobile connectivity was discovered back in July 31, 1995 Jyoti Basu the former chief minister of West Bengal made the first mobile call using a Nokia phone. From where the transformation has begun taking place. Moving the eyes towards smartphones, people are glued to the screen. Smartphones open up a whole new world to the peoples around.

In 2000 India had 10 million internet users and in 2017 it had reached 460million making it the second largest online user base in the world after china. This happened due to the smartphone revolution. Unlike Americans who had a comparatively slow evolution from dial up to smartphones, Indians are moving straight to these mini computers says Ravi Agarwal.

India’s market is glued with cheap phones and cheap data. Smartphone prices have been dropping for years. Indians can now buy a basic smartphone for as little as 20$.

A phenomenon that has driven and will continue to drive next generations of online user was established in 2016. Mukesh Ambani India’s richest man who runs India’s largest company launched Jio, a network which offered 4G voice and data services throughout the country. His company Reliance invested $20 billion in the initiative. They announced plans to build 45,000 mobile towers and then for 6 months they made unlimited 4G data absolutely free. It was a conscious effort to pull hordes of Indians online and its effect was revolutionary. By the end of 2017 160 million people had subscribed. Data usage in the country slashed and India surpassed the United Nations in application downloads and making it the second, where china being the first. Ambani noted that India had moved from 155th in mobile broadband penetration to being the world’s largest mobile data consuming nation. All of these changes represent the huge opportunities for Jio and other companies but yet they also have the potential to transform the internet itself. Indians might utilize the next use of transformation because of how this vast user base will use the internet.

The widespread availability of smartphones and government policies have already led to increase in online payments in just 3 years according to Mumbai market research firm. Smart phones provide educational applications for Indians literacy use. They are also being used to help people compare prices of medicine in a country where most peoples pay burdens on health expenses out of pocket. All these innovations and creativity will lead to the effect of empowering some of the poorest people on the planet and lifting them out of poverty.

The evil side of man’s favorite toy

Even though mobiles are handy, using them on a daily basis for longer hours, will cause a lot of health related problems such as stress, cancer and neck pain. The radiations like MWR may emit from mobile phones is harmful to all people particularly on children and unborn babies. Higher level mobile phone use is associated with sleep disturbances and symptoms of depression in men.

Due to the small screen size of the mobile phone, it puts a strain on people’s eyes. As a result, not much text fits on a screen and should turn pages more often. This as a result causes watering of the eyes and irritation.

Thefont might be small: There are still a lot of people who think that an e-book is a fixed pdf document and that it is needed to scroll and zoom a lot. Such activities can harm your eyes to some extent.

How to overcome it?

  1. Try to maintain a comfortable distance from your phone and avoid getting closer. Keeping the phone away from the eyes. The greater the distance between your phone and your eyes, the less eye strain it is likely to cause, provided the print size and images are large enough for comfortable viewing.
  2. Reading books on the phone is a bit difficult in dim light and the more the brightness, the more the strain.
  3. Even small problems with the eyesight can increase the risk for digital eye strain.
  4. Going out for a walk and doing some physical activities may reduce the stress level.
