30 years ago, advanced robots were just a hopeful dream to people around.  Thanks to the ever increasing advancements in science and technology to make these visions into genuine reality. For quite some time now, humanoid robots have been attaining fame in India. Even though the country is gradually grasping with the developments in artificial intelligence and robotics as compared to others, Indian startups, as well as the government, are working at a quick beat to integrate new-age technologies.

Let’s put up our eyes on humanoid robots that are designed and developed in India.

Manav-Human

It is India’s first 3D printed humanoid robot. Manav is a two-feet, two-kilo weighted robot. It possesses an inbuilt vision and sound processing capacity which makes it capable to walk, talk and dance — just in response to human commands. Manav can also carry out activities like play football, push-ups and headstands. The robot functions as an open-source code so that it can also be trained to learn and respond like a human child. It also has connectivity like WiFi and Bluetooth. The robot contains a rechargeable lithium polymer battery that can operate for an hour with a single full charge. All the parts of Manav are made in India. The outer sections of the robot is made out of plastic and was 3D printed from A-SET’s own 3D printing venue, Buildkart Retail.

Developed By : Manav was created by Diwakar Vaish, Head of Robotics and Research (A-SET) in 2014.

Used For : Meant for research purposes to India’s top engineering colleges.

Mitra-Friend

It is a humanoid robot launched by Indian PM Modi and Ivanika Trump. Mitra is capable of collaborating with humans effortlessly. The five feet-tall humanoid robot is built of fiberglass. It is programmed to greet people using contextual aid, autonomous navigation and facial and speech recognition. Its chest is attached with a touchscreen which can be used to communicate where speech is not possible. The robot works for eight hours by charging once. It is capable of understanding different languages.

Developed By : Developed by Invento Robotics, an Indian startup company.

Used For : Used for customer interaction in banks and patron engagements in restaurants.

Mobocop

India’s first police robot launched in Hyderabad. The humanoid robot is equipped with cameras and an arrangement of different sensors like ultrasonic, proximity and temperature sensors. Apparently, the Robocop can diffuse bombs too. Using all Indian components the beta version is built in India.

Developed By : Developed by a startup company H-Bots Robotics in 2017.

Used For :  Performs police duties such as receiving complaints and identifying suspects.

Kempa

Little bot assistant in Kempegowda International Airport. The robot, named KEMPA, will answer questions of confused passengers in English as well as Kannada. It also recommends places to visit in the state. It interacts in a casual way with passengers.

Developed By : Developed by Bangalore based startup Sirena Technologies in 2018.

Used For :  Helps passengers in answering the queries and providing check in details.

Intelligent Robotic Assistant(IRA)

It is a humanoid robot of HDFC bank. IRA has been built with the help of robotics and AI technologies. Advanced in partnership with Asimov Robotics, a start-up based in Kochi, IRA (v1.0). The IRA 2.0, which has been developed in partnership with Invento Makerspaces and Senseforth Technologies. It has features such as voice recognition and face recognition, which is facilitated using technologies such as AI and ML.

Developed By : Developed by HDFC bank along with Invento Makerspace and Senseforth Technologies.

Used For :  Answers bank related queries and guides to the relevant counter.

Indro

It is the tallest humanoid robot of India. INDRO is an autonomous robot. It was developed inside a house with readily available cost friendly material like aluminum, wood, cardboard, plastic etc. The autonomous humanoid robot is not fully autonomous and can be controlled both manually and automatically. The robot contains 31 motors and can perform actions like a human. Besides, it can lift objects with its hands weighing up to 2 kilos.

Developed By : This robot was created by researcher Santhosh Vasudeo Hulawale.

Used For :  Designed for entertainment and can perform household works.

DRDO’s Daksh

Electrically powered Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Apparently, 20 Daksh robots are already being utilized by the Indian Army. Daksh is able to climb stairs and negotiate cross-country terrains. It is efficient to tow a suspected vehicle away from a crowded area. Moreover, it can be worked from an extent of 2.5 kilometres and can manage car explosives with its high-calibre shotgun. In 2015, after it got upgraded, it became faster, lighter and rugged. It has been prepared with chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear hazard detection mechanisms. The updated Daksh is made of aluminum alloy. It resulted in the reduction of weight. It has become three-time faster than the older version, which was made out of steel.

Developed By : This robot is designed and developed by Indian Defence Research And Development Organisation (DRDO).

Used For :  Used in the army to defuse explosive devices and to locate hazardous objects.

The Indian robotic industry is found to be small contrasted with those of Japan, South Korea, US and China. It only depends on a matter of time before the country becomes a vital player in robotics development.
